A History of Afternoon Tea… Afternoon tea was first introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, 1840. Because lunch was served at noon and dinner was not served until 8:00pm, the Duchess would become ”peckish” around 4 o’clock in the afternoon. She asked her servants to bring a tray of tea, bread and butter, and cakes to her room during the late afternoon. She began to invite friends to join her during the long afternoons for a bit of food and gossip. By the 1880’s afternoon tea became a fashionable social event with upper class and society women throughout England. This was a time for women to dress in gowns, gloves, and hats and showcase their refinement. Today, afternoon tea is a social event for women and men in America. We have adapted the traditional afternoon tea to fit our present day lifestyle. Small finger sandwiches, scones with cream & jam, and cakes are served from early to late afternoon. Friends can socialize over tea to celebrate special occasions and friendships.
